Youngsters don't just attend parties to chow down on cake and ice cream; they want to be entertained with fun games too.

When one is searching for the perfect games to keep a child's birthday celebration lively, those old-time party favorites will do the trick. Here are some classic birthday party games young kids will love.

Pin the Tail on the Donkey

Pin the tail on the donkey is the ultimate classic birthday party game for kids. This game is easy to play. Simply tape a cardboard cutout of a donkey with a missing tail on a wall within kids’ reach. One at a time, blindfold each child, give him a paper or felt donkey’s tail, and spin him around. One by one, let each child try to pin the tail on the donkey’s duff. The kid who gets closest to the mark wins the game.

Traditionally, pin the tail on the donkey is played with thumbtacks. But small, sharp objects are dangerous for young children; tape is a safer alternative.

To accommodate a themed children’s birthday party, play fun variations of pin the tail on the donkey. For instance, during a cowboy themed birthday party, the game can be changed to pin the hat on the cowboy. And for a Strawberry Shortcake themed party, kids can play, pin the strawberry on the hat.

Musical Chairs

Musical chairs is always a fun game for children’s parties. This classic birthday party game requires an open space, a group of players, chairs (one less than the number of players), and a CD player complete with upbeat tunes.

Arrange the chairs back-to-back, and have the kids stand just outside of the chairs. Start the music, and have the children walk clockwise around the chairs until the person operating the CD player stops the music. When the music stops, the kids scramble to sit in the chairs. The child who’s left without a chair is out of the game. Each time a youngster exits the game, remove a chair. There can only be one winner, so repeat the cycle until all of the chairs are gone. The last kid standing takes the prize.

Birthday Treasure Hunt

Treasure hunt is a classic birthday party game that never gets old. To play this game, hide goodies around the room before the children arrive. Provide each child with a small bag, and give the kids five minutes to find as many of the hidden treats as they can. The child who finds the most goodies when the allotted time is up wins the game.

To make the treasure hunt easier for young children, hide the goodies in plain sight. Also, don’t hide things in dangerous places such as cabinets, or on stairs. And double check to ensure all hazardous chemicals are locked away properly.

When kids attend parties they need to stay entertained, otherwise they’ll get bored. Classic birthday party games such as pin the tail in the donkey, musical chairs, and treasure hunt never go out of style, and they’re sure to keep kids’ birthday celebrations upbeat.
