How to Plan a Birthday Party for a Child

Arrange a Celebration Kids Will Remember

Mar 18, 2009 Charlina Stewart

When youngsters turn a year older, moms and dads relish the opportunity to break out the confetti and arrange a celebration kids will remember.

The hustle and bustle of planning a child-centered shindig can be fun. But the process can be tedious for parents who don't know where to start. Listed below is a no-nonsense guide to help parents plan a birthday party for a child.

Select a Location and Mail Your Child’s Birthday Party Invitations

During the spring and summer months, hosting your child's birthday party in the backyard or at a local park is a wonderful idea. During colder months, one can either host the birthday party inside of the home or check out local venues that offer hourly rentals for parties.

Mail your child’s birthday party invitations at least two weeks in advance. This will give parents enough time to make arrangements for their children to attend. Request R.S.V.P's to get a general idea of how many kids will come to the party.

Birthday party invitations can be made by hand or purchased from a local retail or party store. Party invitations can also be found online and downloaded for free just by doing a simple web search. If your kid’s birthday party will be held at an open location such as a park, it’s advisable to require parents to tag-a-long for safety reasons.

Find Entertainment for Your Child’s Birthday Party

Take your child’s age into consideration when selecting entertainment for his birthday party. Clowns are more appropriate for younger children who enjoy silly behaviors. Older children tend to be intrigued by magic tricks, so a magician may be more appropriate for them.

Order the Birthday Cake and Make Goodie Bags

Goodie bags can be filled with a variety of party favors. Just make sure the items inside of the bags are appropriate and safe for the children. Sometimes parents won’t respond to birthday party invitations, but they’ll show up with their kids anyway. So have a few extra goodie bags on hand just in case.

There's no need to spend all day in a hot kitchen trying to bake the perfect cake for your child's party. A birthday cake can be ordered from a local bakery for a very reasonable cost.

Plan Birthday Party Games

Hot potato, musical chairs, and pin the tail on the donkey are all popular children’s birthday party games. These games can be adjusted to compliment a party theme. For instance, if your child’s birthday party theme is “Disney Princess,” instead of playing pin the tail on the donkey, one could change the game to pin the crown on the Princess.

Arranging a birthday celebration kids will remember is as easy as choosing the right location, mailing invitations, securing entertainment, ordering a cake, making goodie bags, and planning a few simple party games.
