Audio books for children offer a wide range of listening options. Kids often love these books but are they good for their development or a lazy alternative to reading?

Although many kids love to listen to audio books, some parents may worry about using these products too often. Whilst nothing can replace one-to-one reading with a child these books may offer alternative benefits. They can help a child develop specific skills as well as giving them hours of enjoyment. So, what are the benefits of audio books for children?

The Benefits of Audio Books

Viewed as a supplement to reading with a child rather than as an alternative, audio books can have a range of developmental advantages. They can, for example:

  • Help children develop their imagination. If the audio book doesn't come with an accompanying book they will have to imagine the story for themselves.
  • Promote a better vocabulary and understanding of words, their meaning and how they work.
  • Improve concentration and listening skills.
  • Teach them that it is OK to do something alone and independently.
  • Promote social and discussion skills if they are listened to as a family or with friends.
  • Encourage them to go on to read the book that the audio is based on.

From a practical perspective, these books may also help children to:

  • Cope better with long journeys: These books can be played in the car or even on trains and buses (although headphones may be preferable on public transport!).
  • Fall asleep on their own: Children that find it hard to get to sleep alone may find it easier to do this if they listen to stories when they go to bed to help them relax.

There are various ways to get hold of audio books. These may often be given as birthday or Christmas gifts or parents may simply want to build up a library for their child.

Where to Find Audio Books

Most people will use audio books in either a CD format or as downloads that can then be played through a computer or an MP3 player. Buying these books doesn't have to be costly. Parents could, for example, save money by:

  • Using audio book rentals services through libraries and video stores.
  • Buying books second hand both in charity shops and online via sites like eBay.
  • Joining audio book clubs and subscription based websites that allow a certain number of downloads a month for a basic fee.

Of course, these books can be purchased singly, just like regular books. Using a shopping comparison site in that instance may be a useful way of saving money.

Giving children an audio book shouldn't necessarily be viewed in the same way as giving them a book or as an alternative. These products come with their own benefits and, used in tandem with regular reading, they could give children a lot of fun and some help meeting their developmental milestones.
