Starting kindergarten at a new school is very exciting; use this guide to make sure parent and child are ready for that big first day.
Transitioning from a small pre-school to kindergarten at a large elementary school is a very big deal. Help a child get ready for that big switch by following these tips.
What to Purchase
A few items will make the child's life just a bit easier while he begins his school years.
A backpack that is big enough to hold a folder for homework. While kindergarteners usually don’t have tons of homework, they often have some that is taken home in a full size folder. Make sure the backpack chosen can adequately fit a folder, sweater, or lunch box. Many backpacks now have clips on them for coordinating lunch boxes.
Comfortable clothes that are easy to pull on and off for potty breaks. Kids this age may still be surprised when the need to go to the bathroom arises. They should wear clothes that are easy and quick to remove so they do not have any accidents.
Shoes that can be taken on and off easily. A busy teacher does not have time to tie 25 pairs of shoes. If the child is not tying shoes by themselves, send them to school with shoes with hook and loop closure (Velcro for example) or slip-on style shoes.
Research Ahead of Time
A little preparation ahead of time in these areas will not take long and will ease much of the "first day jitters" that kids get when something is brand new.
Ideally, visit the school ahead of time to see the new classroom and meet the teacher. At the very least, take the child to the playground at the school and walk around outside so that the area is a little familiar and she feels comfortable.
Find out where the bus stop will be and the bus route. If possible, drive the route with the child so that she is familiar with the area.
Many schools encourage parent volunteers. This is a great way to help out the teacher, help the child adjust, and be a positive presence in the child's classroom. There may be many opportunities to volunteer in reading groups, teaching art, helping the teacher directly, or helping out the school in a different way. The teacher will usually let the parents know what her needs are at the beginning of the year.
Basic Information
Help children to memorize basic information about themselves. They should be able to
spell their own name
know their age
know their birthday
recite their address
recite their phone number
Don’t worry if they can’t do this right away, just keep working patiently with them until they get it.
Starting kindergarten at a new school is a very exciting time for the child and parent. There are many things that will help the child and parent get ready early and reduce anxiety. Is a younger sibling attending preschool for the first time? Help them get ready as well.
