» Feature Writer Tracy Rose - Speaks Loud and Clear

Oh boy, do I hear you on this! My kids do well is school because *I* make sure they do. I stay on top of everything, read to them, make sure homework is done, spend time at their school, etc. But my hubby is not the least bit interested in their school work and the most he will ask about is how a field trip to the movies or bowling alley went. He helped my oldest son (now 8) read *once* and gave up because it was too hard (son has a reading learning disability.)

My hubby doesn't connect to the oldest because he is not a "football kinda guy." He would rather do art stuff and he is in scouts (with me as the parent helper!) But he does better with our youngest (age 4) because he will watch the games with him, shows interest in playing ball and will practice fighting with him (hubby's hobby is kickboxing.)

I guess my main point is that I would like him to communicate better with our kids and talk more about things are really important.

This isn't an uncommon problem, but remember - both you and your husband are going through growing stages as parents (we all do until we die...or experience everything there is to experience), and the children are going through the growing and maturing process. It may be that you and your 8-year old will always be closest due to your interests, but I can guarantee until he is out of the house, his interests will change quite frequently. One of the changes may bring him into your husband's orbit...where they can develop their relationship to the next level. The important thing is that he has a stable and loving relationship with both children, even though he may not understand or accept the interests of the eldest.

I like the way you phrased that...circling into his orbit. It gives me hope they they will find common ground one day:)
